How the courts are organised

Alabama's trial courts are circuit courts, grouped into judicial circuits that cover one or more counties, with district courts handling smaller civil claims, misdemeanours and preliminary matters. Appeals go to the Court of Civil Appeals or the Court of Criminal Appeals, then the Supreme Court of Alabama. Federal cases fall to the Northern, Middle or Southern District of Alabama.
