How the courts are organised

Illinois trial courts are circuit courts, with Cook County forming its own circuit and the rest of the state divided into judicial circuits covering several counties each. Appeals go to one of five appellate districts and then the Illinois Supreme Court. Federal matters fall to the Northern, Central or Southern District of Illinois.

Points that shape Illinois cases

— Attorneys are registered with the Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission, whose public lookup shows licence status and discipline.
— The state applies modified comparative negligence: a claimant more than 50 percent at fault recovers nothing.
— Medical malpractice complaints must be filed with an affidavit and a written report from a qualified health professional confirming the claim has merit.
— Family law speaks of the allocation of parental responsibilities and parenting time, and child support is calculated on an income shares model.
