How the courts are organised

Alabama's trial courts are circuit courts, grouped into judicial circuits that cover one or more counties, with district courts handling smaller civil claims, misdemeanours and preliminary matters. Appeals go to the Court of Civil Appeals or the Court of Criminal Appeals, then the Supreme Court of Alabama. Federal cases fall to the Northern, Middle or Southern District of Alabama.

Points that shape Alabama cases

— Attorneys are licensed by the Alabama State Bar; status and discipline are public.
— Alabama is one of the few states that still applies contributory negligence — if a jury finds the claimant even slightly at fault, recovery can be barred entirely. This single rule shapes how every injury case in the state is investigated and negotiated.
— Product claims are analysed under the Alabama Extended Manufacturer's Liability Doctrine rather than ordinary strict liability.
— Property in a divorce is divided equitably rather than equally.
