Health care attorneys advise providers, practices and facilities: licensing and certificate of need, Medicare and Medicaid participation and reimbursement, fraud and abuse rules including Stark and anti-kickback, HIPAA and data breach response, medical staff and credentialing disputes, practice transactions, and payer contracting.
They also represent professionals before licensing boards and in audits. The area is dense with regulation where technical non-compliance can carry serious consequences, so most of the value is preventive.

Medical malpractice, white collar defence and business law cover adjacent problems.
HIPAA is the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996, the federal law that sets national rules for the privacy and security of health information. It limits how providers, health plans and their contractors may use and share your records, and it gives you the right to see and correct them.
The Stark law is the US physician self-referral law. It bars a doctor from referring Medicare or Medicaid patients for certain designated health services to an entity the doctor — or an immediate family member — has a financial relationship with, unless the arrangement fits a written exception.
