How the courts are organised

Texas has an unusual two-headed structure at the top: the Supreme Court of Texas hears civil appeals and the Court of Criminal Appeals hears criminal ones. Below them sit fourteen courts of appeals, then district courts — the main trial courts, organised by county — with county courts at law and justice courts handling smaller matters. Federal cases go to the Northern, Southern, Eastern or Western District of Texas.
