1,249 attorneys and law firms across Texas are listed here, with the largest concentrations in San Antonio, Dallas, Houston, Fort Worth and Corpus Christi. The practice areas represented most often are personal injury, criminal defence, family law and divorce.

How the courts are organised

Texas has an unusual two-headed structure at the top: the Supreme Court of Texas hears civil appeals and the Court of Criminal Appeals hears criminal ones. Below them sit fourteen courts of appeals, then district courts — the main trial courts, organised by county — with county courts at law and justice courts handling smaller matters. Federal cases go to the Northern, Southern, Eastern or Western District of Texas.

Points that shape Texas cases

— Attorneys are licensed by the State Bar of Texas; status and discipline are public.
— Texas is a community property state, so characterising assets as community or separate is the central question in most substantial divorces.
— The state uses proportionate responsibility: a claimant found more than 50 percent at fault recovers nothing, and any lesser share reduces the award.
— Family law here speaks of conservatorship and possession rather than custody and visitation.
