How the courts are organised

Kentucky uses a two-tier trial system: circuit courts handle felonies, divorce, larger civil claims and probate, while district courts take misdemeanours, small claims, traffic and juvenile matters. Both are grouped into numbered judicial circuits and districts. Appeals go to the Court of Appeals and then the Supreme Court of Kentucky. Federal cases fall to the Eastern or Western District of Kentucky.

Points that shape Kentucky cases

— Attorneys are members of the Kentucky Bar Association, which publishes licence status and discipline.
— Motor vehicle claims run through a choice no-fault system: drivers receive basic reparation benefits unless they have formally rejected that limitation, and who rejected it changes what can be claimed.
— Kentucky applies pure comparative fault, so a share of blame reduces rather than defeats a claim.
— Marital property is divided equitably, and the state has no separate court for family matters in every county — many circuits run a dedicated family division instead.
