Entertainment and Sports Law in California: contracts, agents and minors

California is home to much of the film, television, music, gaming and pro sports business, and its statutes shape deals made far beyond the state. Entertainment and sports lawyers negotiate and review talent, recording, production and endorsement agreements, clear rights to music, scripts and likenesses, structure financing and resolve disputes with studios, labels, managers and teams. It is usually easier to change terms before signing. This page lists 28 attorneys and law firms in California who handle entertainment and sports law matters.

    Rules that protect talent

    • Licensed talent agencies. Under Labor Code 1700.5, no one may operate as a talent agency in California without a license from the Labor Commissioner. Disputes under the Talent Agencies Act go to the Labor Commissioner first, generally within one year of the violation; either side can appeal to superior court within 10 days.
    • The seven-year rule. Labor Code 2855 bars enforcing a personal service contract against the performer more than seven years after service begins. Recording artists must first give written notice, and the label may then claim damages for albums not yet delivered.

    Child performers

    • Court approval. Any party can ask the superior court to approve a minor's entertainment or sports contract. Once approved, the minor cannot later void it on the ground of age.
    • Coogan accounts. The employer must deposit 15% of the minor's gross earnings under the contract into a Coogan trust account, whether or not the court approved it. Work as an extra or background performer is excluded.

    Athlete agents

    • Registration. Under the Miller-Ayala Athlete Agents Act, an athlete agent must file disclosure information with the California Secretary of State before doing business.
    • Student athletes. An agent who signs a student athlete must notify the school in writing within 48 hours.

    Choosing counsel

Ask whether the lawyer works in your field, such as music, film or pro sports.

How to Choose a Entertainment & Sports Law Lawyer in California

    • Check the license. Every attorney admitted in California can be looked up through the State Bar of California, together with any public discipline. Do it before the first meeting.
    • Ask about entertainment & sports law cases specifically. General practice is not the same as a track record in your type of matter: ask how many similar cases the lawyer handled recently and how they ended.
    • Local courts matter. Procedures, filing practice and judges differ from county to county even within California. Ask whether the lawyer regularly appears in the courts that will hear your case.
    • Get the fee agreement in writing. Hourly rate, flat fee or contingency, what counts as costs, and what happens if the case ends early — all of it should be on paper before work starts.
    • Compare several profiles. 28 entertainment & sports law attorneys in California are listed here, with the largest groups in Los Angeles and San Francisco. Profiles carry direct contacts, so you can reach two or three of them without an intermediary.
