7 elder law attorneys serve Smithtown. Their work centres on paying for long-term care — Medicaid eligibility and planning, nursing home contracts, guardianship and conservatorship, special needs trusts and elder financial exploitation.
Plan before the crisis if you can. Once someone is already in a facility the options narrow, and transfers made during the Medicaid look-back period can trigger a penalty with no coverage at all.
Ask about alternatives to guardianship, and be cautious with advisers selling annuities or trusts as a Medicaid fix — ask how they are paid.
