How the courts are organised

Kansas district courts are the trial courts of general jurisdiction, organised into judicial districts covering one or more counties. Appeals go to the Kansas Court of Appeals and then the Kansas Supreme Court. Federal cases fall to the District of Kansas.

Points that shape Kansas cases

— Attorneys are admitted by the Kansas Supreme Court, which publishes an attorney registration lookup.
— Kansas applies modified comparative fault with a 50 percent bar, and runs a no-fault motor vehicle system with personal injury protection benefits and a threshold for pain and suffering claims.
— Marital property is divided equitably, and everything either spouse owns becomes part of the marital estate on filing.
— Agricultural, oil and gas, and water rights questions come up here far more often than in most states.
