How the courts are organised

Iowa runs a unified district court system divided into eight judicial districts, handling civil, criminal, family and probate matters, with magistrates taking smaller cases. Appeals go to the Iowa Court of Appeals and then the Iowa Supreme Court. Federal cases fall to the Northern or Southern District of Iowa.

Points that shape Iowa cases

— Attorneys are licensed by the Iowa Supreme Court and listed publicly with their status.
— The state applies modified comparative fault with a 51 percent bar.
— Marital property is divided equitably, and Iowa courts may divide property owned before the marriage in some circumstances.
— Farm and agricultural matters — leases, succession, drainage and nuisance disputes — are a routine part of practice here in a way they are not in most states.
