2755 attorneys and law firms across California are listed in this directory, with the deepest coverage in Los Angeles, San Diego, Sacramento, San Francisco and Fresno. The practice areas represented most often are personal injury, business law, criminal defence and family law.
How the courts are organised
California runs a unified trial court system: every civil, criminal, family and probate case starts in the Superior Court of the county where the matter belongs. Appeals go to one of six District Courts of Appeal and, rarely, to the California Supreme Court. Federal matters are split between four district courts — Northern, Eastern, Central and Southern California.
Points that shape California cases
— Every attorney practising in the state must be an active member of the State Bar of California. Licence status and any discipline are public and worth checking before you hire.
— California is a community property state: property and debt acquired during a marriage are generally split equally on divorce.
— The state applies pure comparative negligence, so an injured person's own share of fault reduces the award rather than barring the claim.
— Most employee non-compete agreements are unenforceable here, which matters if a former employer is threatening one.
