Attorneys here handle matters crossing borders: cross-border transactions and joint ventures, international contracts and choice of law, trade and customs compliance, sanctions and export controls, foreign investment review, international arbitration, enforcement of foreign judgments and awards, and cross-border family and estate issues.

The recurring problems are practical rather than theoretical: which country's law governs, where a dispute will be heard, and whether a judgment obtained in one place can actually be enforced where the assets sit.

Before you hire

  • Settle governing law, forum and dispute resolution in the contract. Fixing it afterwards is expensive and sometimes impossible.
  • Ask about the firm's network of local counsel in the countries involved. No US attorney is licensed everywhere.
  • For sanctions and export questions, get advice before shipping or paying. Penalties are strict liability in many programmes.

Business law, immigration law and arbitration and mediation cover related work.
